Laparoscopic techniques utilize small instruments to perform surgery in the abdomen without a traditional incision, leading to improved outcomes with many associated benefits to the patient. Our laparoscopic program has blossomed in recent years, with nearly all kidney and ureter surgery done in this way.
For the patient, benefits may include:
Kidney stones are very common in South Carolina, more than nearly every other state in the Union. This problem usually requires prompt attention because of pain resulting from obstruction or infection of the kidney. Kidney stones (calculi) are hardened mineral deposits that form in the kidney. They originate as microscopic particles and develop into stones over time. The medical term for this condition is nephrolithiasis, or renal stone disease.
The kidneys filter waste products from the blood and add them to the urine that the kidneys produce. When waste materials in the urine do not dissolve completely, crystals and kidney stones are likely to form. Small stones can cause some discomfort as they pass out of the body. Regardless of size, stones may pass out of the kidney, become lodged in the ureter (tube that carries urine from the kidney to the bladder), and cause severe pain that begins in the lower back and radiates to the side or groin. A lodged stone can block the flow of urine, causing pressure to build in the affected ureter and kidney. Increased pressure results in stretching and spasm, which cause severe pain.
Our physicians are trained in all modern techniques used to treat kidney stones including ureteroscopy with laser stone disruption and stone basket extraction, where smaller and smaller instruments have allowed increasingly precise stone manipulation. Shock wave lithotripsy allows disruption of a kidney stone without entering the body. Instead, powerful shockwaves travel through the skin to impact the stone, breaking it into smaller fragments which then exit the urinary tract with relative ease. And with percutaneous nephrolithotomy, a high tech option where an instrument is introduced into the kidney via a small tube in the back, virtually any sized stone can be removed. All of these treatments are made available 24 hours a day, so that our patients will not have to wait in pain to be treated.
